FWO-SB Ph.D. grant proposalIntra-abdominal pressure (IAP) is the steady-state pressure inside the abdominal compartment. Based on literature, approximately more than half of the critically ill patients develop intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) within their stay in the intensive care units (ICUs). Since perfusion pressure of the abdominal organs is a function of IAP, elevated IAP results in diminished organ perfusion, multiple organ failure, and death depending on the severity of IAH. Therefore, monitoring IAP is necessary for patients hospitalized in the ICU. Presently, the reference standard for IAP monitoring is an invasive measurement method through the bladder. This measurement technique reflects the abdominal pressure with relatively high accuracy and reliability, however, it carries a high risk of infection and is not applicable to patients with hematomas or other pelvic masses. Additionally, it is a non-continuous IAP measurement technique that can be used every 6 to 8 hours. Consequently, there is a huge demand for developing a novel non-invasive IAP measurement method for critically ill patients. This project aims to design and fabricate a microwave-based sensor on the basis of a novel radar-based technique known as transient radar method (TRM) for noninvasive IAP monitoring. In the long term, however, we aim to develop a certified medical device based on this research project with a worldwide application for intra-abdominal pressure measurement.
