Description

The author demonstrates that by replacing roads and waterways by vectors, it is possible to show in which geographical direction clusters of cities (urban networks) are economically interested. This is done by using the Austrian Netherlands as case-study. It shows that the four erstwhile north-south oriented urban networks (clustered along the North Sea coast, the river Scheldt, the river Meuse and the river Moselle) reorient themselves along a east-west axis during the eighteenth century.
