This presentation focuses on the comprehensive evaluation of the Belgian Red
Courts programme, designed to prevent radicalisation by employing Daniel
Koehler's (2017) theory of de- and re-pluralisation as its guiding theoretical
framework. In 2023, a Theory of Change was developed and published in the
peer-reviewed Journal for Deradicalization (Kamil Abdulsalam, Theeboom &
Coalter, 2023), culminating in a manual with a detailed outline of twelve
sessions, forming the basis for the programme's implementation, which
commences in mid-February 2024.
Our research employs a mixed-methods design to assess the efficacy of the
Belgian Red Courts programme. Validated scales measuring self-esteem
(Schwarzer & Jerusalem, 1995), perceived self-efficacy (Rosenberg, 1965), and
multicultural attitudes (Monroe & Pearson, 2006) will be utilized to measure
participant development. Additionally, in-depth interviews with programme
participants, semi-structured narrative interviews with coaches, and
observations of participant behavior at both the early and concluding phases of
the programme will be conducted.
This study aims to unveil the impact of the Belgian Red Courts programme and
identify the mechanisms of change that contribute. Furthermore, the
transferability of this programme and its limitations to different contexts will be
explored. The presentation will showcase the results, shedding light on the
effectiveness of the programme in fostering positive personal development
