Fairville Mutual Learning Seminar: Conditions for Coproduction

Activity: OtherCERL: Community Engaged Research and Learning activities

Description

Fairville is a Urban Co-production Research Project funded by Horizon Europe. This mutual learning seminar, aimed to foster an exchange between the different Fairville Labs of Brussels and Marseille, presenting the challenges and opportunities in setting up their co-production (action research) practices. The seminar was organized by:
Université Libre de Bruxelles. État Généraux de l’Eau à Bruxelles (EGEB), Centre National de Recherche Scientifique, CNRS.

My Seminar presentation titled: A methodological reflection on the conditions for coproduction. The case of the on-going action research on Flood Risk in the Maelbeek Valley.

It was based on a fieldwork conducted in the months of August and September 2023. A series of interviews was conducted concurrently with the actor-mapping task and the development of the Operational plan for the Fairville lab in Brussels (WP3). These parallel tasks underscored the significance of the interviews in context of the dynamics of Fairville's ‘take-off’ in Brussels.

The interviews targeted individuals already integral to the Fairville lab or anticipated to assume central roles in the future. Interrogating their preconceived notions of co-production aimed at unveiling the varied subjectivities among the involved actors and (preemptively) identifying potential tensions.

The idea was, that this would allow for reflexivity, and safeguard against the imposition of objectives for the Fairville lab based on assumed objectivity from a select few central actors and ensure that the proposed objectives (and working definitions) were informed by a broader spectrum of perspectives.
