Description
This paper analyses the warehouse development in Molenbeek-Sint-Jean, the first community in the Brussels-Capital Region to develop industrial activities. Since the 1830s, Molenbeek developed along the Canal Brussels-Charleroi (1827-32) as an extension of the historic port in the Brussels’ city centre. The presence of the canal and the Groendreef Station (1835), one of the first railway stations of the European mainland, stimulated Molenbeek to become Le petit Manchester belge. Warehouses belonging to a wide range of industrial activities are traced, offering a relevant perspective on the industrial development of Molenbeek and on the construction of its warehouses. This paper shows the connection between the function of the warehouse and its location in the city, as well as the influence of the function of the warehouse on its architecture, organisation and the employed construction materials.| Period | 21 Jun 2017 → 23 Jun 2017 |
