Description
Events across Asia such as continuous protests in Hong Kong, increased tensions in Kashmir and persecution of the Uyghurs minority in China, are raising concerns among human rights activists and international organisations. As these incidents unfold in Asia, we are all witnesses of widespread human rights abuses and potential escalation of tension.With the United States ceding ground in international affairs and creating a power void in the region and a growing Sino-Russian alignment, how peace and stability will be affected?
The World Solidarity Forum believes it is important to discuss the implications of these events on human rights and security across different countries in Asia and investigate EU’s role in preventing further violence.
GUEST SPEAKERS
Hacer Z. Gonul is a PhD Candidate at the Université libre de Bruxelles and a Researcher at the Research Center for East Asian Studies. She has over ten years of research experience in China, including at Shanghai’s Tongji University and Peking University. She was one of the editors of the book: Hui Muslims in China, published by Leuven University Press. She received a scholarship from the Belgian FRESH (F.R.S- FNRS) Doctoral Program.
Júlia Zomignani Barboza is a PhD researcher at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), where she is developing her research on undesirable but unreturnable migrants. She holds an LL.M in International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights from the Geneva Academy. In Geneva, she worked as a legal researcher at the human rights NGO Alkarama and as an associate at the International Committee of the Red Cross. Before joining the VUB, she also worked as a legal advocate for asylum seekers and refugees at Asylum Access Thailand in Bangkok and as a legal assistant at the Refugee Advice and Casework Services in Sydney.
Shamila Mahmood. With a legal career spanning over 26 years during which she has worked with both the Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistan governments, Ms Shamila Mahmood has had tremendous exposure to the complex issues confronting South Asia. The experience gained has allowed her a unique opportunity to become conversant with the dynamics and requirements of developing countries and fragile and conflict affected environments. Drawing from her academic background and vast practical experience she has diverse and accumulative experience and knowledge in the fields of law, Sharia, development and security and expertise in a number of areas of law including international law and human right.
