This presentation examines Javier de Isusi's graphic novel Asӯlum (2016) throughthe lenses of migration studies, comics studies, and empathy theory. Focusing on themes of exile, migration, and human rights, Asӯlum traces the experiences of migrants from the Spanish Civil War to the present, portraying the transnational and transgenerational struggles of refugees. Drawing on theories of empathy from Suzanne Keen, Max Louwerse and Don Kuiken, as well as Sara Ahmed's work on emotions, the analysis examines how de Isusi employs specific comics strategies—such as colour, framing, point of view, and the depiction of violence and trauma—to evoke empathy for displaced populations. By examining the graphic novel's diverse portrayals of refugee experiences, the presentation focuses on how these visual and narrative strategies capture the emotional and political complexities of migration and displacement, in both historical and contemporary contexts.
