Description

Talk on the French military defeat in the vicinity of Oudenaarde (East Flanders) on 11 July 1708 during the War of the Spanish Succession. I address first a set of internal and external perceptions of the event (from court politics in Versailles to Flemish satire), to switch to the legal structures explaining a German presence at the battle. The Duke of Marlborough's British and Dutch army is said to have consisted in no less than 2/3 of German mercenaries. The legal mechanism for these 'borrowing' operations are discussed in the second part.
