Description
This event is organized in the framework of a recent geological drilling campaign (Expedition 364) by the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) in collaboration with the International Continental Scientific Drilling Project (ICDP). In May 2016, a c. 830 m long drill core was obtained from the offshore part of the c. 200 km wide Chicxulub crater in Mexico, a structure that was formed by a devastating meteorite impact 66 million years ago and that is linked to the Cretaceous-Paleogene mass extinction. Scientists drilled the inner peak-ring structure of this crater to better understand peak ring formation, the weakening of rocks during impacts, the composition and emplacement of the impact rocks, the products that were injected into the atmosphere and the biotic and climatic effects of this meteorite impact. Updates and reports of the IODP-ICDP Expedition 364 can be found on this website: http://www.ecord.org/expedition364/.Approximately two years after the crater was drilled by the joint IODP-ICDP project, scientists will come together at the Post-Cruise Workshop in Mérida, which is located inside the crater region on the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico. This meeting is open to all Science Party members and onshore collaborators who are working with samples from the Expedition. The meeting will consist of a mix of short presentations on work done so far, along with posters, and break-out discussion groups. The aim is to relay the work done to date and any results between the Science Party, and help facilitate future publications and collaborations. Furthermore, a number of field excursions are organized to study the rock outcrops inside and outside the crater rim. I gave two talks presenting the research that we - as the VUB AMGC group - have performed over the past 6 months on the suevite and impact melt bodies within the IODP-ICDP Expedition 364 core.
