Description

Nowadays in Europe the 96.6% of the road transport still relies on fossil diesel. In terms of greenhouse gasses, the percentage in Europe referring to the road transport has grown up to 20% in the last years. Accordingly, and in order to avoid the increase of these key percentages, solutions for the introduction of novel powertrain technologies and the usage of alternative fuels have been detected. Nevertheless, the coupling of these solutions with Original Equipment Manufacturers is still not aligned. COLHD is proposed to change that. COLHD (Commercial Vehicles using Optimized Liquid Biofuels and HVO Drivetrains) is a research and innovation project on the use of liquid biofuels in commercial vehicles, such as Liquid Bio-Methane, Liquid Bio-Propane and Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, including the development of optimized biofuel blends, fuel storage systems and engine drivetrains for Heavy-Duty Vehicles. COLHD will bring to the market change-enabling technologies that are beneficial to the environment and, most importantly, which represent an economically viable opportunity for the end-users. In order to achieve this objective, COLHD will provide policy recommendations to lower barriers for market introduction and will evaluate the contribution of the different biofuels for heavy duty to climate action and sustainable development objectives. The first step, and the aim of this paper consists on the identification of economic, social and environmental barriers for the development of the alternatively fueled Heavy-Duty Vehicles market.
