Towards a school data literacy approach

Activity: Talk or presentationTalk or presentation at a conference

Description

Building upon European Commission’s Digital Education Action Plan (2021-2027) and the newly published Strategy for a better internet for kids (BIK+), this interactive panel explored how to empower pupils, teachers, and parents through a whole-school data literacy approach. It provided an opportunity for the exchange on national curricula on data and media literacy, training and guidance to be developed for teachers, and hands-on resources and activities which have proven successful in practice.

In this session, Lotte shared her thoughts on the meaning and importance of data literacy, the link with other digital literacies, and the place it has in the education system. She introduced SMIT’s DataBuzz project as a good educational practice and highlighted the importance of digital inclusion and teacher support, touching upon SMIT’s Data Literacy Competence Model (Seymoens, et al., 2020) as a meaningful tool for mapping and evaluating one’s data literacy practice.
