Government bans old-fashioned energy meters

Press/Media: Expert Comment

Description

The government is requiring all households in the Netherlands to replace their analog energy meters with digital or smart meters before the end of this year. Energy companies and the government are thus sneaking into people's meter boxes via the new Energy Act. Anyone who does not cooperate with the policy risks a fine. This poses risks to privacy. “You're being tricked into it, in a way. Once you have this smart meter, it's switched on by default.”
