The research of the ELEM team is developed in the framework of the Inter-University Institute for High Energies - IIHE (VUB- ULB). At present experimental work is carried out at the accelerator complexes of CERN (Geneva) and DESY (Hamburg) as well as in a neutrino observatory installed at the South-Pole (IceCube experiment). The preparation of the experiments (design and construction of particle detectors) as well as the final data analysis is largely performed at the IIHE. In the wake of the mainstream elementary particle physics experiments special attention has been devoted for many years to spin-off of particle detection techniques in other areas, in particular medical applications (PET camera design and construction). Moreover, the data analysis requirements have led to a solid expertise in computer software, GRID computing and telematics applications. At present the activities of the IIHE-ELEM group are concentrated around four major topics: -the study of the interactions of very high energy galactic - and extragalactic neutrinos in the IceCube Cherenkov detector embedded in the antarctic ice at the South Pole; -study of electron-proton interactions in the HERA-H1 experiment (CERN); -study of 14 TeV proton-proton interactions with the CMS detector at the LHC-collider (CERN); -technological transfer from basic research to applications: medical instrumentation and GRID computing.
