Expertise

Christelle Orlando is a clinical scientist specialized in the blood clotting system. She works at the coagulation laboratory of the department of clinical biology of the UZ Brussel. This laboratory plays a central role in diagnosis of bleeding and thrombotic disorders and management of anticoagulation therapy. She works closely with the UZ Brusse centre for Medical Genetics where she assists in interpretation of genetic tests for coagulation disorders.

Her research focusses on rare inherited bleeding and thrombotic conditions, especially on hereditary thrombophilias, rare disorders that increase the risk of blood clots. Her research helps doctors recognize these conditions more accurately and earlier, to ensure that patients receive the best possible care.

Christelle Orlando also plays an important role in several national and international expert groups. She serves as Secretary of the Belgian Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (BSTH), where she helps guide professional standards and supports collaboration among specialists across Belgium.

Internationally, Christelle Orlando is Co-Chair of ClinGen’s Thrombosis Variant Curation Expert Panel, a group that evaluates genetic information related to clotting disorders. Their work helps ensure that genetic test results are interpreted reliably and consistently around the world.

Since July 2025, Christelle has also serves as Chair of the ISTH SSC Subcommittee on Physiological Anticoagulants and Thrombophilia, where she leads global efforts to improve how rare anticoagulant disorders are diagnosed and understood.

Beyond her scientific expertise, Christelle Orlando is known for explaining complex medical concepts in a clear, relatable way. Whether she’s speaking to healthcare professionals, students, patients, or the wider public, she makes difficult topics understandable and meaningful. Her passion for improving diagnostics, raising awareness, and connecting science with real-world patient care is at the heart of her work.
