Erik Gobbers obtained a PhD in political science at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel in 2023. He holds also master degrees in political science (2012, Vrije Universiteit Brussel), biomedical sciences (1996, Vrije Universiteit Brussel) and zoology (1982, Universiteit Gent). He is a voluntary researcher (vrijwillig wetenschappelijk medewerker) at the Department of Political Science, and his research focuses on the socio-political role of urban ethnic socio-cultural associations in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
