Expertise
I am a part time Research Professor at the Brussels School of Governance (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) and part time Assistant Professor at the University of Amsterdam. I hold a PhD in Politics from the University of Hull (2005). In Amsterdam, I lecture on the MA in European Studies, on the European Policy track, and am affiliated to the ARTES and ACES research groups.
My research interests focus on digital sovereignty and related issues, specifically in a European (Union) context. I am keen to explore how new forms of social and political organisation at the global level influence effectiveness and legitimacy of decision making. I am also particularly interested in the way in which the EU attempts to communicate its role in both domestic and international venues. I have carried out research with colleagues at the Brussels School of Governance on how to optimise dialogue between disciplines to ensure relevant and useful research can help critique, design and improve policy.
I can supervise PhD theses on topics of EU ICT policy both at the global and European levels.
I am an infrequent user of twitter:@jshahin, linkedin:jshahin and researchgate.
