I am Professor of Educational Technology and Chair of the Brussels Research Institute for Teacher Education (BRITE) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Before entering academia, I taught across primary, secondary, and adult education, an experience that continues to ground my research in the realities of classroom practice.

My work sits at the intersection of educational innovation, teacher professional development, and digital technologies. My research has evolved from studying ICT integration in schools towards a broader agenda exploring how innovations, from digital tools to AI-driven environments, can strengthen teachers' practice in increasingly complex educational contexts. I study this at both the individual level (e.g., pedagogical beliefs, digital competencies, professional identity) and the institutional level (e.g., leadership, school culture, professional learning communities). The SQD-model, now used internationally, grew out of this work as a framework for preparing teachers to teach meaningfully with digital technologies.

More recently, I have been focusing on the role of AI in education, examining human–AI interaction, adaptive learning, and the design of innovative learning environments, keeping these developments inclusive, socially responsible, and grounded in educational values. My research also addresses digital equity, with international studies spanning several countries all over the world. Through networks such as EUTOPIA and UNESCO EduSummIT, and through visiting positions at universities in Australia, the Netherlands, Norway, and Canada, I work to bridge research, policy, and practice on educational innovations that matter.
