Expertise

Dr. Lior Volinz is a research fellow at the Crime and Society (CRiS) research group and a member of the Brussels Centre for Urban Studies of the VUB.  His research interests includes surveillance and policing technologies, digital governance, the privatization and pluralization of security provision, and the governance of security in Israel/Palestine. Lior has been working as a senior researcher on a number of projects, including SOS4Democracy, GATHERINGS (Common Standards for Security, Privacy and Cost Of the Surveillance of Public Gatherings), PUL-MOBIL (Producing Urban Legibility: Mobile City Applications and the Local Governance of Minor Offences) and the SRP programme 'Crime & Society: New Challenges'. In addition, Lior was the Principal Investigator in the VLIR-UOS development project 'ViolenceStop: Mechanisms for Care and Protection for Women and Children in Cuba' (2022-2024) with Universidad Central "Marta Abreu" de Las Villas (UCLV, Cuba).

Lior holds a PhD from the University of Amsterdam (2019), where he defended his dissertation titled ‘The Modular Security Toolbox – Assembling State and Citizenship in Jerusalem’ at the department of Human Geography, Urban Planning and International Development. Lior holds a Joint MA degree in Social and Cultural Anthropology from the University of Ljubljana and Stockholm University (2013, cum laude). He earned his BA in Media and History from Tel Aviv University (2010). Asides from his academic and professional work, Lior is continuously engaged with several organizations and campaigns to promote the political and social rights of Palestinians and Israelis alike.
