Personal profile

Research interests

Merlin holds a PhD of Sciences (VUB) and Geography (UniLux). Currently, he is a voluntary researcher at the Cosmopolis Centre for Urban Research at VUB and a research fellow at the Urban Development and Mobility department at LISER (Luxembourg). He is interested in fare-free public transport, the political economy of mobility policies, the labour conditions of transport workers, and public space policing and surveillance.

In his PhD, Merlin has investigated the politics of public transport fare policies (including fare-free public transport) through these three lenses. Notably, he examined the impacts of such policies in how public transport spaces are policed, and the role of transport workers and passengers in these processes. In addition, he researched the implications of fare policies for the working conditions of transport staff.
