Research interests

Michael Ryckewaert has built a strong research track on housing and social in- and exclusion, and the position of these phenomena in the urbanised landscape. In applied and fundamental research projects he investigates public and non-profit housing such as social and collaborative housing, housing cooperatives and community land trusts. He is interested in how these housing alternatives contribute to the right to housing in a metropolitan and internationally comparative context. In a second fundamental research track, he is interested in how economic activities, mixed land use, infrastructure and transport shape urbanization, in a historical as well contemporary perspective. Michael Ryckewaert also conducted contract research for (local) authorities related to both these research tracks. Such projects allow to transfer academic knowledge to planning and urban development practice, while also nurturing the necessary professional dimension in urban design and spatial planning education.
