Mustafa Cevikbas is a tenure-track professor in mathematics education at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), affiliated with the Multidisciplinary Institute for Teacher Education (MILO) and the Brussels Research Institute for Teacher Education (BRITE), Belgium. He has developed an international academic profile through research and teaching appointments in Turkey, Germany, and Belgium. Before joining VUB, he held an Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship at the University of Hamburg, an Einstein Fellowship at Humboldt University Berlin, and a guest professorship at the University of Münster.

His research focuses on mathematics education and teacher training, with particular emphasis on mathematical modelling, problem-solving, technology-enhanced learning, innovative instructional design, and the responsible integration of artificial intelligence into mathematics education. He is especially interested in how digital and AI-rich learning environments can support mathematical reasoning, meaningful classroom practice, and critical judgement.

His early work examined flipped-classroom practices, feedback strategies, student engagement, self-efficacy, and achievement in mathematics. His current research on generative AI builds on more than a decade of work on technology-enhanced mathematics education. It examines how emerging technologies can support, challenge, and transform mathematical modelling, mathematics teacher education, learner agency, and pedagogical judgement.

Recent projects focus on human–AI co-modelling, responsible AI use, and the development of pre-service and in-service teachers’ critical and pedagogical competence in AI-rich environments. His work has been published in leading international journals, including ZDM – Mathematics Education, Educational Studies in Mathematics, and the International Journal of Science and Mathematics Education. He also contributes to the field through editorial work, international collaborations, and active participation in research communities in mathematics education.
