Reinout Vander Hulst is a lecturer in history at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and is part of the team coordinating the transfer of the “Africa Archives” to the Belgian State Archives. He studied history and political science at the VUB, and obtained his PhD in 2023 at KU Leuven with a dissertation on the interactions between colonialism, medicine, and Catholicism. He was a visiting researcher at the University of Kinshasa and at the Fondation Biermans-Lapôtre in Paris. His research specializes in the history of Belgian colonialism, with particular attention to African intermediaries, colony-metropole relations, violence, and bureaucratic power. He is currently studying the functioning of colonial military justice within the framework of the DIGICOLJUST-2 and GUSANGIRA projects.
