Robby Fivez is a post-doctoral researcher affiliated with Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Ghent University. His research is driven by a fascination with the intricate processes involved in construction and their broader societal implications. With a particular focus on the Democratic Republic of Congo, he seeks to shed light on actors and elements that have been marginalized in both colonial and architectural history narratives. During his PhD studies, Robby investigated the history of concrete construction in the Belgian Congo, aiming to debunk the persistent myth of potent empire builders through detailed accounts of construction site incidents and accidents. Currently, as part of the EOS-research project ‘Construction History: Above and Beyond’, Robby explores how methods and themes from colonial history can help to redefine the field of construction history and vice versa. So far, his research resulted in a number of participations in international conferences and workshops as well as in published research papers, book chapters and articles in ABE journal and the Journal of Landscape Architecture.
