Personal profile

Expertise

Since 2002 and as part of a PhD project, I was involved in the CT scan based analysis of cement mantles of femoral hip implants. In collaboration with the Radiology department of the AZ-VUB (Prof. Dr. Johan de Mey) and the ETRO engineering group (Dr. Ir. Rudi Deklerck) we developed and validated software to segment and analyze CT-images of polymeric cemented femoral hip arthroplasty replicas. That software was used to investigate the “French Paradox”, anatomic Lubinus SPII stems and interfacial gaps between femoral hip implants and cement. Some of these projects were conducted in collaboration with the University of Houston (Dr. Ir. Ph. Noble). In collaboration with the University of Nijmegen (Dr. Ir. Nico Verdonschot), we developed a finite element analysis model to further investigate mechanical consequences of stem-broach sizing and interfacial gaps. This lead to the defense of a PhD thesis that was obtained in April 2008. Subsequent research projects involved the analysis of the cement mantle and thermal bone necrosis within femoral resurfacing arthroplasties and CT scan based analysis of stem migration (collaboration with prof. J. Vandemeulebroucke, ETRO group VUB).  These projects were the result of a close collaboration within the BEFY research group including the radiology and orthopedic department of the UZ Brussel.

Since 2018, in as part of an IMEC.ICON project including Academic (ETRO-MIT VUB, SMIT VUB, C4N Neuro VUB) and Industrial partners (De Cronos groep, eSaturnus, Materialise, Orsi Academy) I was involved in the development of augmented reality applications  in orthopedic and trauma surgery.
