Yana Demeyere is a scientific researcher at the Crime & Society Research Group (CRiS) of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium. She holds a master's degree in Criminology (VUB, 2018). For her master's thesis, she examined wether the UPP (Brazilian police force in Rio de Janeiro) was a model of community policing as known in the Global North or not and what impact it had on the ongoing police violence in Rio. To conduct this research, she stayed in Rio de Janeiro for three weeks. Since November 2018 she is working on a project called: ‘Voicing diversity’. The goal is to gain insight into the role and function of police officers with a migration background in strengthening police legitimacy in ethnic minority groups.
