Yazan Badran is a PhD fellow of the Research Council - Flanders (FWO) and a researcher at CEMESO and imec-SMIT research centers at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium.

He finished his MSc in Communication Studies at the VUB in 2015. His research focused on the public sphere constituted by Syrian emerging media after the 2011 uprising. In 2014/15 he was a freelance consultant for International Media Support (IMS) co-authoring a yearly mapping report on emerging Syrian media. He is interested in exploring the nascent media spheres in the Arab World that emerged following the 2011 uprisings. Badran also holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Computer Science from the Nagoya Institute of Technology in Japan (2013), and a Japanese language certificate from the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (2007).
