A multi-proxy approach to study biogeochemical cycling of carbon and nitrogen in tropical and temperate estuaries

The aim of the project is to characterize and quantify the estuarine biogeochemical C and N processing in tropical and temperate environments by developing and applying a proxy tool-box. This requires optimisation, development and implementation of advanced and novel analytical techniques to understand the distribution and sources of organic and inorganic C and N compounds and quantify the major biogeochemical processes in the estuarine environment. Specific objectives are: (1) to quantify and isotopically characterize particulate and dissolved organic and inorganic carbon and nitrogen reservoirs; (2) to determine and quantify the major transformations of organic and inorganic C and N in tropical and temperate rivers and estuaries.
