Assessment of the quality of a local access network for xDSL applications using time domain reflectometry (as extension project to former IWT66)

The topology of a local access network depends widely on the operator, the used cable technology and the country of operation. To assure high bit rates for the digital data communication in the local loop using a DSL (ADSL, HDSL, SDSL or VDSL, hence xDSL), the quality of the latter (attenuation and dispersion of the line sections, transfer functions, topologies...) has to be determined prior to operation. This enables to predict the actual to be expected performance, which will be compared to also derived theoretical channel capacity.

This project aims at the realization of fast and accurate measurement instrumentation based on both fundamental and applied research, which will enable to generate the required estimates from TDR measurements acquired at the site of the central office only, without having access to the premises of the costumer.
