Description
The study of ambiguity, conventions and (conflict) situations in the 18th century "world of corporations" (in Brabant and Flanders) can yield fundamental contributions to projects and debates on new forms of social history, in dialogue with recent movements in sociology and economics (see e.g. L. Boltanski, L. Thévenot, A. Orléan, N. Dodier, M. Callon and others). This movement is currently being stimulated in history by a network around the leading historical journal Annales. Histoire, Sciences Sociales. In the project several models and concepts (compromise, conventions, regimes, etcetera) that are central in this movement will be tested on data about guilds in the Southern Netherlands in the 1 8th century, in particular on trials, apprenticeship contracts and data generated by Inquiries. Conventions on work and "treatment" of minors in corporatively structured sectors of the lahour market will be examined closely. Special attention will he devoted to gender issues, e.g. by studying the options , constraints and actions of women in several guilds.Prolongation/By paying special attention to historicity, conventions and modelling, the study of the world of 18th century craft guilds can result in a fundamental contribution to a programme of innovation of social history proposed by research(ers) networks around Annales. Histoire, Sciences Sociales and Quaderni storici, in dialogue with recent developments in sociology, economics and historical anthropology. This project is a prolongation of the OZR-project "Corporations , compromisses en conventions . Trades of the 18th century : a contribution to " other " social history.". On the one handit is necessary to expand the original project, in a limited but strategic way, to integrate the latest developments, o.a. work of Koselleck, Ricoeur and a number of Italian historians. On the other hand an extension of one year would ensure the presentation of the most important results of this ambitious project in the form of international publications.
