Project Details
Description
This project is financed by the Institute for Science and Technology and
has a duration of 38 manmonths. The aim of the project is to have a better
understanding of the behaviour of large wind turbines.
There are three partners involved in the project : the VUB, the company
Turbowinds and Numeca International.
The first task consists of an extensive measurement program on large scale
wind turbines in the range of 400-600 kW. Two prototypes of the company
Turbowinds were equipped with sensors in order to measure dynamic forces
and vibrations of the wind turbines over the whole range of wind speeds and
operational conditions.
In the second workpackage the measurements are analysed using a code for
the calculation of the dynamic behaviour of the turbine.
In the third workpackage a CFD code based on 3D Navier-Stokes calculations
is used to calculate the flow pattern around the blades in extreme working
conditions, e.g. deep stall.
