The analysis of the risk factors of family dissolution is a crucial first research step. These factors refer to aspects of partnership and parenthood, the socio-cultural and social network, the well-being and mental health, the socio-economic context, and finally, the parental risk factors.
A basis strategy of the project is to compare people who are still in their first marriage with ever-divorced ones. To date, we can only speculate about these kind of issues and thus the project will provide for Flanders for the first time findings on these issues. In order to fill this gap, this project will collect a high-standard large-scale database on divorce in Flanders.
The data for the project is collected in a multi-actor perspective. In order to get an idea on risk factors, we will also analyse the protective factors of stable marriages. Children living at home are interviewed as well. Another part of the kin network that is aimed at in the survey is the parents of the spouses.
An important part of our study design includes a prospective, comparative sample of two groups: couples who first got married in the year 2005 on the one hand and never-married couples who started to cohabit in 2005 without marrying on the other hand.
