The ash cloud produced by the eruption of Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland is impacting air traffic all over Europe in an unprecedented manner. For the first time in the last century volcanic ash fallout affects Belgium disrupting air traffic and generating huge financial costs for both the private and public sectors. Belgian earth scientists with long-established experience in this field propose to document this unique volcanic event that offers the opportunity to portray the dispersion of ash over our country and to study the characteristics of the ash. Such a study is critical to inscribe Belgian scientific research within international efforts that are developing to study the catastrophic impact of this eruption.
