-Drilling of the Bosumtwi crater (Ghana), petrology and geochemistry of the impactites.

Project Details


-The drilling of the Bosumtwi crater in Ghana by ICDP (International Continental Scientific Drilling Program) starts at the end of this year. This crater formed ~ 1.07 million years ago and since then has been filled by an 8-km lake. The scientific goals of this ICDP deep drilling project are: 1) to study the subsurface structure and crater fill of one of the best preserved large young impact structures, and 2) to obtain a complete 1 million year paleoenvironmental record in a area at the border between the tropics and the expanding desertic zones and for which so far only limited data exist. In the framework on this project the impact material, sueviteand melt rock will be described and sampled in the field during the drilling. The rocks will then be the subject of a petrological study in the lab. to document the crater forming process. A particular attention will be devoted to the geochemical analyses of platinum group elements (PGE), which elemental rations can identify the type of projectile responsible for the crater. This recognition is important to better understand the flux and the origin of the bodies impacting the earth throughout geological times. In parallel, the lake sediment will be carefully sampled at high resolution, so that in 2005 a proposal can be submitted to the FWO together with VUB and UGhent colleague to reconstruct the paleoclimatic evolution of this key area during the million year.
