Description
Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) are essential tools for achieving the European Green Deal and
meeting 2030 climate targets. However, PEDs have predominantly been studied in dense metropolitan
areas, overlooking crucial European regions known as 'intermediate territories.' These areas,
consisting of diverse fragments (cities, towns, farmland, industrial/commercial zones, and natural
elements), present a significant challenge for the ecological transition in Europe, even if divergent
plans for energy transition often exist.
Building on previous research (TRANS-PED, PED4ALL, Grins), the InterPED project aims to develop
feasible, operational and inclusive strategies for PEDs in intermediate territories. Serving as levers for
a profound energy transition, effective regeneration, and holistic changes, these strategies will be
defined through a shared co-productive methodology. Over three years, the project will involve urbanregional stakeholders in Belgium, Italy, Romania, and Portugal. Applying a shared co-productive
methodology will result in a set of energy, policy and regulatory, governance and social, territorial and
integrated strategies for PEDs, positioned as pivotal elements for regeneration, transition, and
innovation. Testing and replication activities will validate their feasibility.
Engaging in online and in-person activities, project partners will co-produce a range of tools, fostering
a community of practice. The ultimate aim is to position Europe as a global role model for urban
energy transformations.
