With this project - dye doped micro-optical components for free-space parallel optical interconnectionmodules - we envisaged the fabrication of a special classs of refractive optical components. They consist of active micro-optical modules to connect microlaser and detector arrays on CMOS circuits. These components have the potential to allow amplification of the optical datasignals next to a free-space guidance of the datasignals to and from silicium chips. This approach would lower the optical power, and consequently the thermal dissipation in the signal generating arrays of vertical surface emitting microlasers and increase their channeldensity and datatransmission capacity. The main idea behind this approach was the doping of the plastic micro-optical components with fluorescent dyes to induce amplification using an optical pumping scheme.
