Evaluation of low level activated rubble in nuclear medical practies.

Use of high energy ionising radiation in radiotherapy units induce fast neutrons which always results in activation of the biological shielding (concrete walls) built around the installations. This low level activation can be the origin of a health hasard due to the secundary emission of radiation. It is however probable that the activation in most of the hospital installations will be so low that the activity of the rubble or of the machine and infrastructure will (either immediately or after a rather short decay period) fall below nuclear regulatory concern. In order to allow clearance of the above mentioned waste or machine parts it will be necessary to demonstrate by a priori calculation, sampling and comparison to standard cases that no residual man made activity above background level is present. Our preliminary results have to be confirmed and a thoroughful study of the impact on radiation exposure of the public and on the waste policy in the Brussels region has to be made.
