Project Details
Description
The European Water Framework Directive aims to protect European water resources and ensure or improve the ecological quality of surface waters. To this end, the ecological quality of water bodies is regularly assessed based on physico-chemical and hydromorphological characteristics, pollutant concentrations and biomonitoring (i.e. a screening of various biological indicators of water and habitat quality). These reports describe the results of biomonitoring in the Brussels Capital Region in 2019 and 2022 based on five biological quality elements (phytoplankton, phytobenthos, macrophytes, macroinvertebrates and fish). To determine the ecological quality of a water body, the ecological quality ratio (EQR) is used. The EQR is a value between 0 and 1 determined for each quality element separately.
