The immune system is a network of cells and molecules, interacting to protect our body from infections and playing a critical role in a range of inflammatory diseases and cancer. The cells and molecules in the local tissue environment created by inflammation thus provide targetable markers which can be employed for detection, tracing, drug delivery and to regulate the outcome of inflammation and disease. Therefore, a major focus of our research is on a thorough characterization of the heterogeneity and dynamic changes of populations of immune cells in mouse models and human samples of various diseases affecting a range of tissues and organs including liver, brain and tumors. In this research, flow cytometry is a core technology, offering the possibility to analyze multiple parameters on a single cell level using live cells. Similarly, flow cytometry is also a central technique for monitoring the effect of new immunotherapeutic
compounds and treatment methods and for developmental and stem cell biology research. Although our flow cytometry equipment remains valuable for basic flow cytometry analysis, the number of parameters that can be analyzed simultaneously on the cells is putting severe limits on our ability to keep up with the increasing complexity of cell populations and their often overlapping
biomarkers. To be able to stay at the forefront of immunology and cell biology research, we are hereby requesting funding for a 30-parameter state-of-the-art flow cytometer.
