Description

This Belgian joint research project aims at enhancing the detection of buried landmines using a mulitsensor approach (Metal Detector, Ground Penetrating Radar and Thermal Imaging), and to study the sustainable robotic platforms solutions for the humanitarian mine clearance. (multisensor approach). The contribution of the VUB concerns
- Advanced data visualization and analysis techniques for Ground Penetrating Radar for landmine detection. This includes efficient methods for clutter reduction, statistical detection and buried objects classification using time and frequency features.
- Development of methods in the utilization of time-dependent heating (or cooling) of shallow buried targets illuminated by natural illumination (sun and sky light alone) and extracting object features (i.e., the spectral and temprature signature differences between the landmines and clutters). Currently, our investigations are mainly concentrated on modeling of landmines and clutters, target enhancement through inter-time correlation, and thermodynamic modeling of IR measured objects.
