International Congress on the Literary Works of the Austrian Writer Ilse Aichinger.

Project Details

On 28 and 28 April 1998 Heidy Margrit Müller, professor of German at Vrije Universiteit Brussel, organized an international congress on Ilse Aichinger. The scientific activities were funded by the Austrian Embassy of Brussel, the Flemish Research Foundation (FWO-Vlaanderen) and the Swiss cultural foundation Pro Helvetia.

The lectures focused on three main topics:
1) The use of language and silence as an implicit signature of resistance;
2) Playful writing as an impulse for change and (or) disagreement;
3) The question whether the novel Die grössere Hoffnung (1948) is a contribution to mystification of the Holocaust or rather a document that can make readers more sensitive for repression.

The proceedings have been published by Aisthesis (Bielefeld, Germany) in 1999.
