Isolation and identification of saponins from Ruscus aculeatus L. and Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer, compared with the saponins of Aesculus hippocastanum L.

In order to identify the biological activity of various saponins and compare them with the better known Aesculus hippocastani semen saponins, it is indispensable to purify enough molecules so that fysico-chemical studies can be undertaken in order to control the resorption of these saponins by oral, transdermal or intramuscular way. Since 5mg of a pure saponin is necessary for a structure determination and the same amount for a biological activity screening, these saponins need to be extracted and further purified in a preparative way by HPLC. Although the required expertise is present in the laboratory to work out the purification strategies, this is not the case for the apparatus that can realise these semi-preparative separations. Preliminary analytical tests during the past two years have demonstrated the feasibility of this project.
