The Fund for Scientific Research - Flanders Research Group, 'Labour, Labour Relations an Labour Markets in Western Europe, 1500-2000' was started under the directorship of prof. dr. Hugo Soly, Free University Brussels (Belgium). The aims of the Research Group are: to further interdisciplenary and international co-operation agreements among scholars, in the study of the changes that have occured in labour processes, labour relations and labour markets since the sixteenth century, with special reference to periods of global societal transformation and urban wage-earners and self-employed artisans/shopkeepers. Western Europe is the core area.
The structure of the Research Group is a network of twenty research units from seventeen different scientific institutions from Belgium (UG, KUL, UFSIA and ULB), the Netherlands (IISG, RU Utrecht and KU Nijmegen), the United Kingdom (U Cambridge and London School of Economics and Political Science), France (Lille III), Austria, Germany, Italy (UdS Bologna), Spain and USA (Cornell). The core-unit is the 'Centre for the Study of Pre-Industrial Production Processes and Labour Relations (PIPA)'.
