Model-based rate-distortion optimization for scalable video coding: theory and applications

This project addresses three goals:first of all, the development of new distortion-rate models for SVC that take into account SVC specific properties and inter-layer spatio-temporal dependencies, both in an error-free and and an error-prone scenario. Secondly, this model will be used as basis for a statistical multiplexing scheme for SVC streams. The third goal is to develop rate-distortion optimization strategies, also based on the new rate-distortion model, targeting multiple objectives and subject to multiple constraints (delay, resolution etc.).
