Muddling through murky waters: the exploration of Brain Hemispheric Involvement in Idiom Comprehension

Project Details

Description

The research presented in current proposal is situated in the field of
clinical neurolinguistics, a field which endeavors to unravel how
language and speech are organized in our brain, and this specifically
through working with patients who have in one way or another lost the
capacity to use speech and language. In current project, we focus on the
organization of idioms, or figurative language, and more precisely try to
find out whether it is specifically the left or right side, also called a
hemisphere of our brain that mediates this comprehension process. We
will do this in Dutch and Greek in healthy participants and aphasics,
people suffering language issues after a stroke; to be able to obtain
comparative results for these very different languages and understand
how the brains of healthy and impaired individuals handle the processing
of this specific language phenomenon.
