Practicing sports as a holebi. An opportunity or an obstacle to emancipation.

Project Details

Description

In 1998 a research project was started supported by the investigation board of the VUB with the objective of defining the Flemish holebi-sportclubs (Stouthuysen, Ghekiere, Bollaert, 1999). Out of this first explorative research ever carried out on this subject in Flanders, it appeared that the separate sports practice of holebi's can nolonger be neglected by the image-building of this group. At the moment the number of participants as well as the number of sports practiced is still relatively small, but we clearly notice that the separate sporting is constantly on the reise. This general tendency however calls up a lot of questions and often leads to discussions about the social-integrative relevance and functions of sports. Do these separate sportclubs and sport activities actually contribute to the integration of holebi's in society or just the reverse? Are they an opportunity or an obstacle to emancipation? To what extent can participating in sports promote the emancipation of holebi's. Our research project, financed by the Flamish Comunity, Departement of Equal Cha,ces in Flanders, will try to answer the preceding questions in order to formulate some concrete policy-recommendations.
