Promoting deeper EU-GCC relations.

Project Details


The aim of the project was to promote and reinforce cooperation between European Union and Gulf Cooperation Council countries in a number of key strategic areas of mutual interest, to raise public awareness and understanding of the EU among GCC society and provide the framework for reflection and debate about EU-GCC relations.

The specific objectives of the project were:

to understand the Institutions and Policies of the EU and the EU-GCC relations, strengthen cooperation in the areas of political relations, governance, human rights, energy, trade and education and provide recommendations for how cooperation can be implemented;
to enhance mutual understanding between the people of the European Union and the 6 Member States of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), including a broader knowledge of their languages, cultures and institutions;
to promote better understanding of the EU’s position on global challenges and of its economic, social and political integration process;
to share best practices among opinion-formers, decision and policy makers, professional associations, trade unions, political parties, the media and academics and exchange ideas on the future of the relations between EU and GCC based on the workshop discussions.
The project’s partners were: Fundacion para las Relaciones Internacionales y el Dialogo Exterior (FRIDE), Environmental Policy Unit of the National Technical University of Athens (EPU-NTUA) Institute for European Studies (IES).
