Psychological impact of screening for insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM).

    Project Details

    Description

A large population screening program for the early detection and prevention of IDDM was initiated in Flanders (Belgium). Nondiabetic first-degree relatives at risk of developing diabetes are being identified in preclinical phase and invited to take part in future prevention trials. In parallel with this medical project, a study was set up to examine the psychological impact of screening for IDDM. The aim of this study is to identify psycho-social variables which could improve future recruitment, information gining and giudance of participants in subsequent prediction and prevention programs. At the time of recruitment and after risk notification, first-degree relatives (>16 years) and the parents of children (>16 years) volunteering for screening, will be questioned about (1) the (expected) impact of screening on their lifestyle and quality of life and (2) their willingness to participate in prevention trials. During a follow-up study participants perception and adherence to trial requirements will be examined and compared to their attitudes before risk notification.
