Research into discrimination in the rental housing market in the Limburg mining municipalities

Project Details

Description

Practical tests by Prof. Pieter-Paul Verhaeghe have shown that there is discrimination on the rental housing market in various Flemish central cities on the basis of, among other things, ethnic origin and income source.
However, the question arises to what extent there is also discrimination on the rental housing market in Limburg mining municipalities. These municipalities are very different in many respects from other Limburg municipalities, and certainly from other Flemish (center) cities. Research by the Economics and Policy Management research group at Hasselt University, for example, shows that residents of mining municipalities feel less safe compared to other Limburg municipalities, while crime rates are not higher there.
The prevention of discrimination in the private rental housing market on the territory of the mining municipalities (Genk, Heusden-Zolder, Maasmechelen, Leopoldsburg, Beringen and Houthalen-Helchteren) will be measured objectively on the basis of academic practical tests at sector level.
