Project Details


In this project we want to study 2 aspects of the new treatment strategies for Parkinson's disease. Since drug research is focused on developing new drugs with both neuroprotective and antiparkinsonian activity, we want to screen some possible candidate molecules with this profile. First, we want to study the neuroprotective effect of these drugs in parkinsonian rats. If they turn out to be neuroprotective, we want to investigate through which mechanism this occurs.
In a second part of this project we want to contribute to research into the mechanism of action of DBS. First, we will characterize the STN-substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNr) pathway pharmacologically in normal and parkinsonian rats using in vivo microdialysis. We will also stimulate the STN electrically and measure neurotransmitter release in the SNr. This project should lead to a better understanding into the role of the STN in the control of movement, but may also lead to the development of new drugs for treating Parkinson's disease.
