Anno 2006 the classical channels and the orchestra's of the Public Broadcasting Services are discussed by governments all over Europe. There for it is usefull to study the history of the NIR and its orchestra, the Great Symphony Orchestra, which was very succesfull between 1930 and 1960. Although Light Music was more important in the beginning of the NIR, the Belgian parliament decided to create a Public Broadcasting Service where high culture became an important value. This decision (1935) resulted in the creation of the Great Symphony Orchestra and the building of a prestigious broadcasting building on the Flageyplein in Brussels. In those days the NIR owned 5 orchestra's and 2 choirs, since music was broadcasted live in 2/3 of the time.
The research focuses on the start, the structure, and the policy of the Music Department but also on the programming and the orchestra's. Also the influence of politics on the Music Department will be investigated.
